Dr. Refai Showkathali is a highly respected cardiologist with over 24 years of experience in the field. He has returned back to India in 2014 for practice after spending 14 years in UK working in world-class tertiary cardiology centres such as St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, St. George’s Hospital, London, Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College Hospital), London, The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, Essex and King’s College Hospital, London. Dr. Refai specialises in Advanced Interventional Cardiology apart from routine angioplasties including emergency primary angioplasty for heart attack. He is an expert in performing high risk CHIP PCI such as Laser (ELCA), drilling techniques such as Rotational, Orbital atherectomy, Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL), Impella and ECMO assisted PCI, Bifurcation, Left main stem PCI, CTO (both antegrade and retrograde), Vein graft PCI, FFR, IVUS, OCT via the wrist (radial approach) and has the highest case series of this in India. He is a pioneer in concept of Zero (Ultra-low) contrast PCI in patients with kidney disease who are considered to be extremely high risk. Beyond complex coronary interventions Dr. Refai is well-versed in structural cardiac interventions such as TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), TMVR, TRIC valve and PVL (Paravalvular Leak) management. He is also adept in device implantations including Permanent pacemaker (Leadless pacemaker), AICD (Defibrillator), ASD/VSD (Atrial Septal Defect/Ventricular Septal Defect) closures, PFO (Patent Foramen Ovale), and Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAA). He holds the distinction of performing the first renal denervation (RDN) procedure with Simplicity catheter in Tamilnadu.
